History of BIET, Umerkote
The Block Institute of Education and Training (BIET), Umerkote, has a rich legacy of advancing teacher education. Initially established in 1960 as the Elementary Teachers’ Training School, the institute primarily focused on training elementary teachers in the undivided Koraput district. In 1989, it was upgraded to the Secondary Teachers’ Training School, expanding its role to offer both pre-service and in-service teacher training.
In 2014, the Odisha government elevated it to BIET Umerkote, increasing the intake from 50 to 100 students annually and establishing it as a nodal center for in-service teacher training under the Right to Education (RTE) Act. The institute now offers the Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.), aligning with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005, and continues to serve as a hub for educational excellence.
